Turmix SV 577 (2nd Post)

Took out this machine because of a request for further information.  This is lovely looking machine however it has suffered re my move and the stored damp conditions.  The carriage was stiff and therefore needed cleaning and oiling.  There seemed to be a problem with the stitch size cams so I managed to dismantle the right hand cam however the springs were worn – this was a working machine in its day and enclosed were many patterns plus letters which I outlined within my previous post.  I simply cleaned and greased the cams and put it back together.  Casting on with this machine is easy when you know how, it is outlined in the manual, you can cast on with ewrap or with an open cast on.

The tension bar is exceptional on this 6 mm machine that has 160 needles.  I reckon it would have been a good machine in its day and probably had to be to pay its way.  If you are lucky enough to find one that has not been overused it will produce, however despite the 6 mm gauge it is only comfortable with up to 4 ply yarn.  I must have been a popular as there were many pattern books attributed to the machine.  It has a holding position and 2 fairisle screws at the back of the carriage to allow the use of 2 yarns.  Perhaps the most fiddly bit is the stitch size regulator.  Mine only works because I take the carriage off to manually line up the cams.  It also comes with a set of pattern rulers and an excellent row counter.

This is one of three similar machines, the Orion 220, the Busch KM180 and finally the Turmix 577.  The Orion 220 is most unusual in that it offers 220 needles.
